The different between ASTM A53 & ASTM A106

ASTM A53:

This Standard specification for pipe, steel, black and hot-dipped, zinc-coated, welded and seamless.

ASTM A53 is always required with large quantities from different industries, and it includes three types in pipeline system:   a: Seamless type

b: Welded Type (ERW, EFW, HFW, SAW)

c: Hot Dipped Galvanized type

it most commonly used in oil and gas pipelines system, water treatment, buildings, underground water drilling, power station, and machining to spare parts.

ASTM A53 has many grades:     a: Seamless Type S, has grade A & B

b: Welded Type E, has grade A & B

c: Furnace Welded Type F, has grade A only

In case ASTM A53 Grade B in ERW pipes, the weld seam shall be done the heat treatment with a minimum 1000 ˚F (540˚C).

ASTM A106

ASTM A-106 is the standard for seamless carbon steel pipes designed for High-temperature services.

It is most commonly used in refineries and plants to transport gasses and fluids at high temperature and high pressures.

This specification covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service in NPS 1/8 to 48 inclusive, with nominal wall thickness as given in ANSI B36.10, It shall be permissible to furnish pipe having other dimensions provided such pipe complies with all other requirement of this specification.

Pipe order under this specification shall be suitable for bending, flanging, and similar forming operations, and for welding. when the steel is to be welded, it is presupposed that a welding procedure suitable to grade of steel and intended use or service will be utilized.

Application for both Standards:

Both pipes applied for mechanical and pressure system, transportation stem, water, gas, and etc.

ASTM A 53 Pipe Application:

  1. Construction, underground transportation, extraction of ground water while building, steam water transportation etc.
    2. Bearing sets, machinery parts processing.
    3. Electric application: Gas transmission, water power generation fluid pipeline.
    4. Wind power plant anti-static tube etc.
    5. Pipelines that required zinc coated.

ASTM A 106 Pipe Application:

Especially for high temperature services that up to 750°F, and it could substitute ASTM A53 pipe in most of the cases. In some country at least in United States, usually ASTM A53 is for welded pipe while ASTM A106 is for seamless pipe. And if client asked for ASTM A53 they will also offer A106. In China, manufacturer will offer the pipe that comply to three standards ASTM A53 B / ASTM A106 B / API 5L B.
